My Breast Cancer Awareness Event

I am from Cebu City, Philippines, cancer survivor and an active member of Rotary Cebu Gloria Maris which is an all women's club. We partnered with I Can Serve (a group of breast cancer survivors) for some of their activities. We had Lay Cancer Awareness Forum whose panelists included noted oncologists, cancer surgeons, ob-gyn physicians here in the city. We had a dinner for a cause with a celebrity pop singer in one of our malls. We also joined the Pink Run participated by different sectors of society all wearing pink during the fun walk. I was one of those who had a makeover in Feel Good, Look Good by Estee Lauder

How I Celebrated Breast Cancer Awareness

I was an attendee in some of the events mentioned above. In the Feel Good, Look Good event sponsored by a major retailer, I was one of those picked to have a make over. It was fun! Got to be covered by some local reporters who covered the event. My friends and I joined the Moonwalk, an early evening walk to raise more consciousness about breast cancer. All of us wore something pink. Next year, I intend to be fully involved in the planning and preparations which I heard started as early as last year!!!!

Lessons Learned

  • networking is important
  • healthy collaboration with other sectors to accomplish the tasks necessary to run these events
  • as a cancer survivor, information is power!
  • volunteerism, selflessness

Pam Stephan, About.com Breast Cancer, says:

Joining together helps survivors see the extent of support available and opens doors to reach back and help others just beginning their journey.
