Guide Review - Eating Well Through Cancer: Easy Recipes & Recommendations
Holly Clegg and Dr. Gerald Miletello have teamed up in a very practical cookbook called "Eating Well Through Cancer." Clegg has written 14 cookbooks and mastered the balance between meals that are easy and quick to prepare with proper nutrition. Miletello has been an oncologist for 20 years and takes a real interest in his patient's lives beyond the exam room. Together, Clegg and Miletello offer recipes and medical advice that should help cancer patients and their loved ones eat well, even through the challenges of chemotherapy and recovery. Early in the process of writing this book, Clegg's father, Jerry Berkowitz, was diagnosed and started treatment for larynx cancer. Clegg dedicated this book to her father, saying in her preface, "I hope these recipes will make treatment a little easier with the comfort of food."
"Eating Well Through Cancer" is divided into nine chapters, each of which is aimed at providing nutrition and coping tips for chemotherapy. Every chapter contains medical advice, nutritional information, a shopping list, menus, and easy recipes. You'll find one-dish meals, simple entrees, creative vegetable dishes, and fun fruit recipes, as well as snacks, light meals, and desserts. Recipes for smoothies and shakes are included for those times you need a soothing calorie boost or a break from solid food. Every recipe is followed by a nutritional analysis and diabetic exchanges, so anyone can use this book. All of the recipes are well-indexed in the back of the book and cross-referenced by side effect in the front of the book.
Most of the recipes are written so that cancer patients could cook for themselves - but a special chapter addresses the caregivers, too. For all those people who want to help - the Caregiver chapter is a must-read! This chapter goes beyond food and addresses ways that friends and family can offer support. Copy the first page of this chapter and pass it on to your support team members.
Who Should Buy "Eating Well Through Cancer"
Cancer patients, their family members, loved ones, neighbors, and anyone who likes to cook will be able to use this book. None of the recipes require above-average cooking skills, and few require special equipment. Exotic ingredients will not be called for, but these dishes will be flavorful - without being overbearing. If you don't live near the person who is in treatment, a copy of this book would make a good gift. Lastly, anyone who enjoys cooking and eating healthy meals can use this cookbook - the final chapter is on post-treatment diet, ending on a very hopeful note.
