British pop star, singer and DJ Sonique has had surgery for breast cancer at a private hospital in central London. Sonique, whose real name is Sonia Clark, was born in north London to a mother who favored Motown music. She began singing and training as an athlete at age 6, and her physical training shows in her well-toned figure. Sonique began recording as a teenager, writing songs and singing at clubs with different bands. In 2001, she was awarded the Best British Female Solo Artist.

Sonique's spokesman Stuart Watts said that her surgery was "a matter of urgency". She was diagnosed with breast cancer and scheduled her surgery one week later. Watts said the artist is in "stable condition" following her surgery and will "await further results over the next 48 hours from her doctors." Sonique, 40, plans to remain in the hospital until Saturday. Her concert dates and the planned release of her new single, 'World Of Change' will be delayed until she is feeling better.

Sonique joins other young women singers who have fought - and survived breast cancer: Kylie Minogue, Sheryl Crow, Bif Naked, Anastacia and Olivia Newton-John.
