"The Secret" Doesn't Cure Breast Cancer
Tuesday February 27, 2007
Rhonda Byrne's book makes many claims, but doesn't say that following "The Secret" will cure breast cancer. Byrne insists that she isn't telling people to avoid doctors. Although the book's DVD features a woman who claims that she cured herself of breast cancer in three months without any medical treatment, psychologists and physicists don't endorse the idea of Ask-Believe-Receive as a cure-all. There's nothing wrong about positive thinking, a good attitude or guided visualization, but it is not a substitute for medical treatment. So what is the science behind the "law of attraction" on which Bryne's book is based? "Basically, it's chaos theory," said Harvard psychologist Carol Kauffman. "I think what positive thinking does is raise your consciousness to possibilities so they can snag your attention."
Oprah Winfrey featured this book on her show and says she lives by the law of attraction. Is it just expert marketing, or is there more to it? Vote your opinion. |

I just wrote about this same issue on my blog. Navigating the Secret’s suggestions for healing cancer is a tricky issue. But one worth thinking about.
