How People Reacted to My "New Hairdo"
Before chemo, I had curly hair, so I decided to get the straight hair I'd always wanted and bought an awesome pin straight bob wig. Admittedly, people who didn't know I'd lost my hair were suspicious
My Most Embarassing Wig Moment
I'm not very tall, and I was walking through a crowd at a party. Some of the taller people in the crowd squeezed their way past me and wooosh! my wig almost got dragged away with them. Fortunately, my friends were fast and rushed over to literally smack my wig back down on my head.
I Had the Most Fun With My Wig When ...
I took it to the hairdresser for a shaping. My hairdresser styled it and everyone there made me feel fun and fabulous for choosing a bold, straight style.
How I Passed My Wig Along to Others
I didn't. For years, I kind of wanted to burn it but couldn't seem to part with it. It's still in my closet as a memory.
My Wig Choice
Bob Wig with heavy bangs from Dream USA. Cost was approx $250. I took the wig to my hairstylist to thin out the bangs.
How I Chose My Perfect Wig
Style and fit were my top priorities when shopping for a wig. It was most important to me to get hair that was stitched so as to have a natural swing. I brought my sister along for her input on every single wig, and we tried on many!
I allowed myself a budget of $500, but spent half of that in the end.
Advice
- Take your time when shopping and try on everything. It's an emotional process and you need to take the time to find something that makes you feel fabulous, even if it means trying on 50 wigs.
- Once you narrow in on a few wigs, take photos of yourself in them. Sleep on it and refer back to them when making a decision.
- Talk to your hairdresser about what's going on. S/he can trim your wig for style and also suggest ideas and styles when it's time to start growing your hair back.
- Once your hair has grown back a bit, consider a small hair piece than can be glued in as bangs. You'll have an adorable pixie style.
