If you will have a mastectomy, you may be asked to consider immediate reconstrustion. What are some things to think about, in making your decision?

Ask the surgeon that will do the procedure to refer you to a plastic surgeon. When you see the plastic surgeon, ask questions that will help you decide.
  • Which kinds of reconstruction am I a good candidate for?
  • Will my health insurance help cover this?
  • What would the recovery time be for each procedure?
  • How many follow-up visits will be needed?
  • Will any additional surgeries be needed, to complete the reconstruction?
  • If I need follow-up surgery, is that done in the hospital or a surgical center?
  • What would each kind of reconstructed breast feel like, from the patient's perspective?
  • What will my reconstructed breast look like?
  • Which kinds of reconstruction would be easiest on me?
  • What are the risks to consider, for the option that I am considering?
  • How long will the procedure take?
  • Can I speak with some of your patients who have had these procedures?
