Definition: sound waves that are higher in pitch than the human ear can hear.

Ultrasound is used in medical imaging to produce images of specific areas in soft tissues such as the breast. Since ultrasound imaging machines use sound waves rather than X-rays, they are safer to use than X-rays.
Pronunciation: UL-tra-sound
Also Known As: ultrasound test, ultrasonography
Alternate Spellings: ultra sound
Examples:
If a radiologist sees something unusual on a mammogram of a woman's breast, the next step may be to order an ultrasound image of the particular area. An ultrasound image can give a clearer picture of such features as:
  • cysts
  • calcifications
  • scars
  • tumors
Ultrasound is also used in imaging of other soft tissue in the body:
  • abdomen
  • pregnancy
  • carotid artery
