Definition: A type of white blood cell (WBC) filled with microscopic sacs (granules) containing enzymes that digest bacteria and other microorganisms. This process is known as phagocytosis.

Neutrophils surround "intruders" in your blood and "eat" them, thereby destroying potential infections. These white blood cells are a very important part of your immune system. Neutrophils are produced in the bone marrow.

Alternate Spellings: neutrophile
Common Misspellings: nutrofil, newtrafill
Examples:
During treatment for breast cancer, you will have routine blood tests called complete blood counts (CBC). One important part of the count is your neutrophils. If your neutrophils are low (neutropenia), they can be boosted to help your immune system recover. Treatment for neutropenia is usually injections of Neulasta, Neupogen (filgrastim), or Leukine (sargramostim).
