Definition: A condition that occurs when lymph nodes have been removed or damaged and lymphatic fluid collects in those tissues, causing swelling (edema).

Lymphedema can be a side effect of breast cancer-related surgery.

Pronunciation: LIM-fa-DEE-ma
Also Known As: lymphatic obstruction
Alternate Spellings: lymphoedema
Common Misspellings: limpadema, limfadema
Examples: Lymphatic fluid circulates throughout your body in a system of nodes and lymphatic channels. Arm lymphedema can occur if most of the underarm lymph nodes have been removed and tested for breast cancer metatases. Your body can eventually re-route the lymphatic fluid and prevent the swelling.
