Definition: a gene is a unit of heredity.

Many characteristics of an individual human body are determined by the genes a person inherits from her parents.

Your hair, eye and skin color are inheirited from your biological parents, because their genetic information is passed on to you at conception. Some people have genes that help to suppress tumors, and some have genes that can trigger tumor production. If your family health history includes several close relatives that have had breast cancer, your doctor may suggest genetic testing.
