Guide Review - Waiting for Wings by Heidi Marble

After losing both breasts, ovaries and uterus, Heidi Marble could relate to a bald, damaged, unwanted mannequin in a junk shop. A survivor of Inflammatory Breast Cancer, Marble adopted the orphaned female form and transformed it into a jeweled work of art. "Jewels" as the mannequin is now known, was reborn to beauty and artist Heidi Marble found her new purpose.

Now a 10-year survivor of a rare and aggressive form of breast cancer, Marble tells us her story through photos, poetry, story, journal entries, and the voices of friends and supporters. Only 34 at diagnosis, mother to a 2-year old boy and wife of a devoted husband, Marble fought for her life with tenacious intensity and sacrifice. Along the way, she gathered other survivors as friends, looked for divine guidance, and allowed a friend to document her experience with photographs. Remaining defiantly beautiful without breasts, shorn of flowing hair, Marble redefines our concept of beauty as she gains confidence and regains her health.

Without much complaint, she writes about the full range of treatments that she endured, including loosing her fertility. Just hearing her son laugh was enough to pull her back from the brink and motivate her to continue the fight. Any survivor, young or old, will be able to relate to Marble's fight for survival and journey through recovery. Keep your tissues handy while you're reading this - several of the poems may trigger your tears.

Now a motivational speaker, Heidi Marble is raising awareness for breast cancer and raising funds to subsidize the needs of other cancer patients. "Jewels" helped her transform a collection of buttons, baubles, and brooches - some battered but still sparkling - into a collection of survivors, supporters, and dollars. Her Donate & Create events repeat that success by encouraging groups to spend a week gathering jewelry, buttons and baubles from survivors and supporters, which are made into a unique work of art. The resulting artwork is photographed and printed on custom t-shirts, which are then sold to raise money for the expenses of current patients. In addition, the art itself becomes part of a touring collection that continues to gather attention, awareness, and funds for treatment. Marble is a powerful speaker, using humor, visual aids, and facts to get her message across. Truly, the terrified young mother has metamorphosed like a butterfly, and is no longer "Waiting for Wings."

Heidi Marble will soon have a documentary film out, made by Motion Eclipse Pictures, and a new book, "Taking Flight" is expected to appear in Breast Cancer Awareness Month - October 2010.
