Definition: An antioxidant is any chemical compound or substance that inhibits or reduces oxidation damage caused by free radicals. Antioxidants are found in green tea, tomatoes, carrots, and soy foods, as well as in vitamins A, C, and E.
Pronunciation: AN-tee-OX-sih-dent
Common Misspellings: antioxident, anteoxidant
Examples:
Antioxidants can help promote good health for your heart, brain, and eyes, by slowing the natural aging process. Oxidation (loss of an electron) occurs normally during metabolism, but sometimes creates a free radical that can cause cell damage. Antioxidants can stabilize free radicals before they alter a cell. Isoflavones, a natural substance in food can have antioxidant properties.
