The Influence of Breast Cancer on My Life

Folks, I've been writing these pages about breast cancer for a little over 6 years now. My main reward for doing this is helping people get through diagnosis, treatment, and survivorhood.

Imagine my surprise when I was notified that the website Sharecare had named me Number 6 out of the Top 10 Online Influencers of Breast Cancer! Sharecare was created by Dr. Oz and Jeff Arnold as "a health and wellness social media platform that connects people with top-ranking experts."

Sharecare measures online influence by looking at a year's worth of breast cancer conversations online. I guess the time that it takes to get the word out on my site and the blog  here, as well as on FaceBook, Twitter, our Forum, and our videos has been well spent. The other honorees, like Liz Szabo, Dr. Nalini Chilkov, and Gayle Sulik, are veteran journalists, medical specialists, and dedicated researchers. Many on this list are also breast cancer survivors. There's nothing like having been in the battle to make you want to protect and encourage others who are coming up in the ranks.

Six years ago, I was a 4-year survivor who just wanted to make it to that all-important 5-year mark without any scares. I was happy to have my hair back, still working on getting my full health back, and looking for ways to reach back and help others. When this writing gig came up, I eagerly grabbed at the chance to make my experience with cancer serve some good purpose. I didn't want my Cancer Year to go to waste - I wanted it to mean something, to use it for the benefit of others. If that has happened over the last 6 years, then I'm glad.
