If your mammogram reveals a mass that is unclear and may cause concern, an ultrasound can help clear up the diagnosis. Dense breast tissue can hide structures such as fluid-filled cysts, which sometimes look like a tumor on a mammogram. Sound waves bounce off the internal architecture of your breast tissue and create an image of the masses. Ultrasound uses no compression, and no radiation.
