Targeted Radiation Faster, More Effective

Sunday August 12, 2007
A new technique for internal radiation after lumpectomy for breast cancer has less risk, fewer side effects, and no recurrence. Five days of internal radiation, instead of six or eight weeks of external radiation, resulted in 100% no recurrence for 45 women who had this treatment. The technique is called Mammosite, and radiation is limited to the cavity in which the tumor was found, rather than skin, fatty tissue, and lobes and ducts nearby. A small balloon attached to a tube is inserted into the tumor cavity, and radiation is given in 10 doses over a 5-day period. After treatment, the balloon is removed and the patient is free to go.
