Lisa Moore found a lump in her breast in January 1999, and was diagnosed with breast cancer. She and her husband Les stuck together through the surgery, chemo, and all the side effects. Her six-month battle was very public, and was published as a book in October 2000. On March 20, 2006, Lisa discovers that her breast cancer has returned and has spread.
Lisa is a character in the comic strip Funky Winkerbean, a creation of Tom Batiuk, who is a prostate cancer survivor. Funky Winkerbean is published in 400 newspapers and the artist, Tom Batiuk has been given the American Cancer Society’s Cancer Hall of Fame Award, as well as the Duke Comprehensive Cancer Center's "Jonquil" award for helping raise awareness of breast cancer.
