Computerized Mammography Doesn't Replace Radiologists

Friday April 13, 2007
Mammogram
When you have a mammogram, the result is an x-ray image of your breast tissue. It must be carefully examined for an accurate diagnosis of conditions in the breast. But who or what is reading that image? A new report in the New England Journal of Medicine find that computer-aided detection software that analyzes mammograms found 20 percent more suspicious areas, resulting in additional screenings and biopsies, often turning up benign results. An experienced radiologist will make a more accurate reading of your mammogram, and give you more useful advice about follow-up, if needed.
