Breast Cancer Care Should be Coordinated
Thursday February 22, 2007
"Once you get onto the treadmill, you realize very quickly that you are your own advocate," said Nancy Noble, a 47-year-old breast cancer survivor from Ontario. Many patients hope for a coordinated treatment and follow-up system, but find themselves in treatment as well as in charge, navigating between specialists and technicians, and searching for the best information. The Ontario chapter of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation funded a three-year study which reports that patients are "looking for a more integrated system of care that won't add to the already stressful job of fighting the deadly disease." Canadian breast cancer screening is currently recommended for women 50 - 79, but the study says that should be expanded to include women who are 40 - 49 years of age.
