Cultural Perceptions of the Future May Affect Perception of Recurrence Risk
In surveys done with African American and Caucasian breast cancer survivors, researchers found that the way women think about the future affects their thinking about a possible return of the disease. Dr Chanita Hughes Halbert, of the University of Pennsylvania, surveyed breast cancer survivors in an effort to understand why African American women had a lower risk perception for recurrence than Caucasians. Education about breast cancer may be a factor, but perceptions about the future is also a key difference.
