Metastatic Breast Cancer Survival Doubles

Monday January 29, 2007

Treatments Make Advanced Cancer into Chronic Disease

"You have advanced breast cancer." This diagnosis is still a life-changing event, but now treatments and disease management have in many cases changed the outlook for those with metastatic breast cancer. "Survival has doubled for these people," said John Barstis, medical director at the UCLA Jonsson Cancer Center in Santa Clarita, California. The American Cancer Society recently published the results of a survey showing that cancer deaths are in decline for the last 2 years. ACS credits several things with better survival: more people quit smoking, detection is better and tumors are found earlier, and new treatments are more effective.
