Fighting Breast Cancer From Within

Thursday January 18, 2007
Radiation has been used to fight breast cancer and prevent it's return, either by aiming a beam of radiation through the skin and surrounding tissue at the tumor site, or by implanting seeds of radioactive material directly into the tumor site, which bypasses the skin and helps reduce side effects. The latest method of implanting radioactive seeds is being researched at Sunnybrook Regional Cancer Centre in Toronto, Canada by Jean-Philippe Pignol, M.D. The titanium seeds are implanted during a one-time office visit, after which they deliver radiation to the cancerous area, then lose their radioactive power. This frees the patients to return to their regular schedules, and almost completely eliminates side effects.
