Secondhand Smoke and Breast Cancer Risk

Wednesday January 3, 2007
Knowing your monepausal status may be a key to whether secondhand smoke will raise your risk for developing breast cancer. The British Million Women Study which took data from women aged 50 to 64 found no link between secondhand smoke and breast cancer risk. However another study done at University of California-San Francisco found that premenopausal women who were exposed to secondhand smoke did have a 70 percent increased risk for developing breast cancer. The California EPA points out that the age at which a woman has her first child and is exposed to smoke is also a risk factor.
