Intimacy and Breast Cancer Treatment
Saturday September 16, 2006
During and after treatment for breast cancer, your intimate life may offer some challenges and changes. Treatments and follow-up medications are used to suppress estrogen, which helps prevent the return of breast cancer. Estrogen cannot be used in such cases, to help with menopausal symptoms, such as hot flashes, or vaginal dryness, without increasing the risk of recurrence. Professor Lillian Nail, a survivor and senior scientist at Oregon Health & Science University, was interviewed about sexual intimacy issues and how the healthcare system has not yet addressed how women recovering from cancer treatment can be helped.
